Importance of Sealing or Expunging your record
With the recent Election it has become evident of how important it is to seal or expunge old arrests. In particular the Congressional race between Patrick Murphy & Allen West is a prime example of how an old arrest that could have been expunged came back to haunt someone. Congressional candidate Patrick Murphy was arrested several years ago February 16, 2003 to be exact for two Misdemeanor crimes stemming from the same event. Even though the charges were eventually dropped the information regarding his arrest and booking still existed to this day, leading to an embarrassing negative campaign attack ad by his opponent Congressman Allen West. Allen West’s negative ad showed a copy of Murphy’s arrest report and a clearly disheveled booking photo of Patrick Murphy. Had Mr. Murphy expunged this arrest after the charges were dropped, all the information regarding his arrest would have been deleted and destroyed by the government agencies that held the information. An expungement would have prevented anyone from seeing or finding this arrest information in a Government background check. It seems apparent that Candidate Patrick Murphy either didn’t know about expunging this arrest or never attempted to have it done. Big Mistake.
