Found Not Guilty: Jupiter Police Officer Kevin Jacko – Excessive Force & Official Misconduct Case
Attorney Darren D. Shull represents Jupiter Police Officer Kevin Jacko in an Excessive Force and official Misconduct case. Officer Jacko was found not guilty of all charges. The jury’s verdict after less than three hours of deliberation in Jacko’s week-long trial ended the case surrounding the June 2013 beating of Cody Blankenship, who ran from officers after they were called to a report of an unwanted guest in the 100 block of Land’s End Way.
In the larger national debate on cases of excessive police use of force, Shull on Friday said he believed Jacko’s case boiled down to three simple letters: DNA.
A defense expert testified that had Jacko used his baton to beat Blankenship’s face, there would have been much more of Blankenship’s blood on the baton than the small amount investigators uncovered.
And Shull also called in use of force expert Dennis Root, known for his testimony in the murder trial of George Zimmerman, to tell jurors before the case ended Friday that he thought Jacko’s use of force against Blankenship was justifiable.
In the end, Shull said he believes that jurors trusted the testimony of Jacko and other officers who said they never saw the baton strikes. Though prosecutors called it “baffling” that none of the officers saw what led to Blankenship’s severe injuries, Shull said the verdict showed it was Blankenship who jurors couldn’t trust.
“If you have someone like Cody Blankenship, who I believe is a pariah to society, and on the other hand you have someone like him [Jacko] who has a clean record and has never been disciplined, he’ll win,” Shull said of his client.
